Today I’m happy to welcome my awesome blog friend to guest post and announce some exciting plans that we’ve been cooking up for the new year.
Last year I had a great experience with a Whole30. If you don’t know much about Whole30, it’s pretty much a healthy clean-eating challenge where you cut out grains, dairy, sugar, legumes, alcohol, and all processed foods for 30 days. I know what you’re thinking, what the heck do you eat? Well, you still actually get to eat really great food! Most of the recipes on this blog are Whole30 compliant and with the options of meat, fruits, veggies, healthy fats, and more you never feel deprived!
So today, I am happy to introduce Gretchen from Gretchruns to tell you more about our Facebook accountability group called Runningwhole30 that we’ll use to start our group challenge on January 4th. I asked her some questions so we can better get to know her and then I’m letting her take the reins on this post!
– What character from a movie do you most relate to?
Hermione from Harry Potter! I was always the nerdy, goody-goody in school, but also have that adventurous spirit. She always wants to do the right thing (even if it’s not the most “fun” option) which I can definitely relate to. And now, I really want to watch HP!
– What are your top 5 interests?
Running (duh!), traveling, cooking, music (I play the saxophone and violin!) and sports (watching and playing!).
– How did you get into blogging?
I started my blog in 2012 when I was training for my first marathon, but I stopped posting the day before my race (talk about a cliff-hanger!). After a few horrible races and failed training cycles, I decided to document my training for the Biggest Loser half and get some outside accountability. I’m so glad that I decided to start blogging again- the community is amazing and supportive!- and it’s a great creative outlet for me.
– What are you most excited for in 2016?
I’m getting married! I’ve been dating Dan for 4 ½ years now, and we’re getting married in Belize. We both love to travel and explore, so I’m so excited for the trip and to marry my best friend (I swear, I’m not usually this cheesy!).
Hi everyone! My name is Gretchen and I blog over at GretchRuns. I’m so excited to be joining Margaret for my very first Whole30 challenge! There are a few different reasons why I want to do the Whole30 in January, so let’s chat:
Like most people, my eating habits over the past month have pretty terrible. Between holiday parties and family dinners and work potlucks, I have been eating way more processed and fried food than I’m used to. We won’t even talk about all the sugary, alcoholic drinks that I’ve been drinking! Let’s just say that my body is more than ready for some clean, healthy foods.
To go along with that point, my stomach and body has not been feeling the best lately. I’ve noticed a lot of stomach problems, particularly when I’m running. I’ve also been having some dizzy spells and problems sleeping. I’m interested to see how cleaning up my diet will affect my health, and want to see if these problems go away!
Fun fact- I love to experiment in the kitchen! Last year, I tried out a different cuisine each month (from German to Indian and everything in between!). To me, following the strict Whole30 guidelines and making interesting, delicious, filling meals is just another cooking challenge. All month long, I’ll be sharing recipes and meal plans which I’m really excited about!
For the past few months, I’ve been on a big budgeting and planning kick. I like to do meal planning each week, and try to eat at home as much as possible. The Whole30 forces you to plan every single thing you eat to make sure everything fits their rules, which is perfect for me! If I’m going to be planning out my food anyway, why not make it super healthy? Another bonus – alcohol is expensive in Pennsylvania, so if I can’t drink any, that’s tons of money in my pocket (and my little beer belly might finally go away!)
After reading “It Starts With Food”- the book written by the Whole30 creators, I was so intrigued by all the success stories. I’ve never been one to diet or go on cleanses, so I’m just really interested to see what kind of differences this will make for me- from the inside out! Margaret and I will be sharing some “non-scale victories”, so stay tuned for more info about this.
I’ve been a runner for most of my life and never paid attention to what food I’m eating. This April I’ll be running in my third full marathon, so I want to see if eliminating alcohol and sugar will improve my running or not! Each week I’ll be doing a mile time trial, as well as documenting my workouts to see if a healthier diet does anything to help or hurt my training.
Finally, the plan is only 30 days. I can do anything for 30 days, so why not try to be healthier and save some money?!
Who else is in?!!
If you’d like to do it you can join our Facebook group here. In the mean time, I suggest getting a copy of “It Starts With Food” by Melissa and Dallas Hartwig to learn more and to make your life much easier! You can get it here on Amazon or I know Gretchen picked up a copy at her local library.
How do you plan on jumpstarting your health in 2016?
What’s your favorite healthy meal?
Do you prefer accountability with others or self-motivation? I kinda vary and sometimes do even better on my own, but this is going to be so fun and that’s all I need right now!
